I'm always in the mood
Friday, February 12, 2010

The best part is starting the script.

Then I’m confident. The story is every writer’s dream and my writing has reached unknown heights.

After that it is a rocky path.

Now, at this moment, “ERG” will become way too short and feels very far from any Oscar while “The Beautymaker” will be perfect.

At least one will be perfect.

Not long ago I wrote that I loved writing on “ERG” and felt the opposite about “The Beautymaker”.

Yesterday I opened “ERG” in Final Draft and wrote the final lines ending the scene. Then nothing more happened.

I left the document open while I worked and discovered hours later that I hadn’t thought of anything more to write.

But, I still think it is a great idea to have two parallel projects. They are so different, and it feels like I’m always in the mood to write on any of them.

Desiree,

Blogs aren't scripts, for sure. But I have a "draft file" just crammed with pieces. Some are already 500 words long. Some are outlines. Some have nothing more than a title.

But I've discovered that if I skim through them once a week, it seems to get my juices flowing. A sentence will come to mind, or another point, and I just go in and plunk it into the proper file.
Eventually, a few begin to take shape, and with more and more additions they move to the top of the list. Soon, I have another draft ready to really work on for publication.

On the other hand, I had a very unusual experience last night. I was reading another person's blog, and finally gave up. It was so long, and so complex I just couldn't understand it. I felt badly, as though I had failed.

I woke up this morning with a perfect response to last night's experience. I don't mean I had an "idea". I had a title, a three-part outline and a conclusion, for heaven's sake!

Isn't this writing process mysterious and wonderful?

I agree, the writing process is mysterious and wonderful.

But it is also in some ways predictable. Like you know that if you read your draft file you get inspired to write something. And like me, who get inspiration when I read my notes for my current script.

I'm very interested in that blog post you described. It must have been a very special blog for you, because bad blog entries are found everywhere and aren't likely to cause you feel like you have failed.
