Rebuilding the dream
Tuesday, August 4, 2009

You know, what hit me real hard about dropping out of the Nicholl Fellowship contest was the broken dream.

No, not about the splendor about my script. About having the opportunity to try to make a living in another way than now.

The fellowship is about making it financial possible for a number of writers to take a leave from their day jobs and focus on writing for about a year.

That was what I was dreaming about. To be able to see if I could make that work.

I have a family. I can’t just quit my job and live on hope and dreams. I need solid money, like most people. Anything else would be irresponsible.

I like the place where I work, I can’t complain about my job.

But I am a writer.

That is something nobody can take away from me.

My job is not who I am. It is what I do for a living.

I simply have to bite down hard and keep on getting better for yet another year.

Definitely keep going! There are other ways of getting there - you may get commissioned! Don't rely on competitions. Seek other routes. I'm sure there are plenty of production companies in Sweden you could approach... Keep going! :)

Amanda proved this point beautifully in her recent post:

Thank you.

I keep going. No problem there. As I said, what I was looking for was time to write, not fame.

No, there are no Swedish production companies.

Well, there are, but you see, they are not interested in scriptwriters and their scrips. That is the truth.

Directors write their own scripts and then they try to find money to do their movies. Every contest I have seen in this country a budget should be sent along with the script.

It is completely okay to write a novel while having a day-job and no experience in writing, but writing a script without education and keep a day job, then you are not considered serious.

I'm so sick-n-tired of this attitude, that I don't even bother to try any longer.

Perhaps someone starting a production company is already a fan;)

Maybe a indie director in the United States who writes his own scripts needs and wants people from around the world to rewrite his words to make his movies more global.

Maybe this same director is even open to directing a short movie written by you.

You sound very mysterious, Robert. What are you up to now?

I'm interested.
