Conflicts should be grand.
Why, oh why, do I have such problem to grasp that?
It is some natural reaction to avoid conflicts I guess. (Although some say I have a habit of causing them.)
I have the rough outlines as far as midpoint. Now the conflicts should escalate.
Hum… Conflicts?
Oh, you mean that little thing in that was used as a catalyst? And that small problem that she is not interested in a love affair?
Eehh…
Alright, let’s see. Instead of a message about the hero’s brother with Cerebral palsy (CP) the brother arrives in person to this place that does not accept odd behavior.
And the rejection of the hero could easily expand too.
In general we try to be kind or at least polite. The barrier to let a character – especially the hero - go beyond what is social acceptable is quite high. And to make this look like normal… Ouch.

I'm a natural born trouble maker.
I swim in conflict. I think conflict plays best when it's a slow burn.
Let the reluctant hero hold back as long as possible and then explode into conflict.
Not a bad idea at all. Thank you.
I believe the slow burn to conflict works best in a 'The Fool Triumphant' type story.
Two good examples of this are the movies 'Sargent York' and 'Copland'.
Sargent York has a wonderful story arc. An angry young hillbilly loses his one chance to buy land and marry the girl of his dreams. He decides to kill the man that stole this chance for a future.
Riding a mule in rainstorm with his rifle he is struck by lightning. He awakes in the mud and sees the mule dead. He holds his rifle up, looking at the barrel peeled like a banana.
He hears singing at a near by church and finds God. He becomes the true life hero of World War One. In that second act he is the peace loving reluctant hero that doesn't want to go to war.
In Copland we find a quiet hero who lost some of his hearing when he saved his dream girl's life as a teenager.
Deaf in one ear he can't be a New York Cop and must settle on being a Sheriff of a town full of corrupt cops. In the end of the movie he risk it all to do the right thing.
Besides the great script this movie has some of the best sound editing I've heard.
Thank you for the movie recommendations.
Robert - loved COPLAND. Great movie. Your description makes me want to check it out all over again.
